WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 6) – The Waynesburg University baseball team dropped both games of a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader in Waynesburg on Saturday to the visiting Saint Vincent Bearcats. Saint Vincent held on in game one for a 5-2 victory before downing the Yellow Jackets 13-2 in game two.

Game one started with pitchers J. Jay Paskert and Jared Haller locking horns in an early-inning pitchers duel. That broke up in the third inning when Saint Vincent (10-7, 7-1) took advantage of a Jacket error and a passed ball to put up three runs, two of which were unearned.

Saint Vincent added two more runs in the fourth inning to pad its lead at 5-0. The Jackets (9-11, 2-6) showed their mettle by scoring one in the bottom of the inning after a two-out rally. Senior third baseman Tim Chilcote and sophomore designated hitter Neal Yakopin put together back-to-back singles before freshman catcher Derrick Zavatsky doubled home Chilcote.

Paskert settled down and pitched well the rest of the contest, keeping SVC off the board and maintaining Wayneburg's hope for a win. The Jackets tried to rally again in the home half of the seventh inning as Zavatsky singled and moved to second on a fielder's choice before senior second baseman David Houseman drove him in to pull his team within three runs. Unfortunately, Haller finished off the complete game before the Jackets could bring the tying run to the plate.

Paskert took the loss after working all seven innings of a complete-game effort. He surrendered five runs, three earned, on six hits, while striking out four Bearcat batters. Senior shortstop Kyle Sasala joined Yakopin and Zavatsky as Jackets to record multi-hit efforts in the opener.

Saint Vincent struck first in game two, plating two runs in the first inning. Waynesburg cut the lead in half with a run in the home half of the second when Zavatsky and Yakopin both continued their strong days with a pair of singles. Senior right fielder Adam Horning drove in Zavatsky to cut the deficit to 2-1.

That was as close as the Jackets came to pulling out a split of the twin bill as Saint Vincent tacked on four runs in the fourth, four more in the sixth and three in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Waynesburg closed out the scoring in the seventh with a run that came when junior pinch-hitter Andrew Rose grounded out to plate sophomore pinch-runner Kyle Weyand.

Eight different Jackets recorded at least one hit each in game two. Senior pitcher Anthony Longo took the loss, giving up six earned runs in 3.1 innings of work. He struck out one and walked one.

Waynesburg will look to bounce back from Saturday's losses with a big win over first-place Washington and Jefferson on Wednesday, April 10. First pitch for the single nine-inning contest is set for 4 p.m. in Waynesburg.
