GREENSBURG, Pa. (Aug. 30) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team hit the road to open the 2013 season and made the most of the trip by beating Pitt-Greensburg 8-1 on Friday afternoon. It was the second-straight win for the Yellow Jackets (1-0) over the Bobcats (0-1) in as many seasons.
The Jackets sprinted out of the gate and swept the match's three doubles contests. Sophomore
Rachel Klemash teamed up with junior
Alyssa Daniel for a quick 8-1 win at first doubles, before senior
Markie Gustafson and junior
Madison DuBrock made it 2-0 Waynesburg with an 8-5 victory at the number-two doubles spot. Sophomores
Amanda Hooker and
Rachel Wilson completed the sweep thanks to an 8-2 triumph at third doubles.
Klemash, Daniel, Gustafson and DuBrock all moved to 2-0 on the day by besting their opponents at first, second, third and fourth singles, respectively. By the time Greensburg ended the Jackets' run of wins at fifth singles, the visiting team already had the overall team victory firmly in hand. Junior
Lauren Cowden put an exclamation point on the day thanks to her 6-2, 6-0 win at the number-six spot.
Waynesburg will have some time to savor its victory, as the Orange and Black is off until Wednesday, Sept. 4, when the Yellow Jackets make a road trip to Penn State Altoona. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
