Women's soccer cruises past Pitt Greensburg

Five different Jackets score in 6-2 win over Bobcats

Box Score

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 4) – Coming off a tough loss to open the season on Friday, the Waynesburg University women's soccer team bounced back in a big way on Wednesday night in their home opener against Pitt Greensburg. The Yellow Jackets scored four first-half goals en route to a dominant 6-2 victory at John F. Wiley Stadium.

Waynesburg (1-1) wasted little time setting the tone offensively, scoring just 33 seconds into the match on an unassisted goal from senior Susie Godwin. The stayed at 1-0 until junior Natalie Abraham tallied back-to-back goals, both assisted on by senior Taylor Augustine, giving the Jackets a 3-0 advantage. Waynesburg continued its first-half dominance when junior Kirsten Miller found the back of the net after taking a pass from junior Becky Hotek in the 31st minute.

Pitt-Greensburg (1-1) broke up the shutout by scoring its first goal just after the start of the second half. Eight minutes later, however, junior Emily Mullady made it 5-1 in favor of the home team by burying a penalty kick to crush any momentum the Bobcats had built from their first point of the night. Augustine wrapped up a productive night by scoring a goal of her own in the 56th minute. Greensburg concluded the night's scoring in the 57th minute. Waynesburg's six goals are the most for the Jackets since they scored six in last season's home opener victory over Franciscan.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ciara Scott got the start and earned the victory, stopping two of the four shots on net. Augustine and Abraham both totaled four points on the night, to pace the Waynesburg offense.

Waynesburg saw significant edges in both shots (33-to-five) and corner kicks (10-to-one). The Jackets will look to make it two victories in a row when they hit the road Friday to take on Juniata College. The match against the Eagles is scheduled to get underway at 5 p.m.
