Women's tennis travels to Penn State Altoona

Short-handed Yellow Jackets drop 7-2 decision

Box Score

ALTOONA, Pa. (Sept. 4) – A short-handed Waynesburg University women's tennis team travelled to Penn State Altoona on Wednesday for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match up with the Lions. The absence of several top players, including sophomore number-one singles and doubles player Rachel Klemash, was surely felt by the Yellow Jackets, who fell by the score of 7-2 to Altoona.

Despite the absence of Klemash and others, the Jackets (1-1) got off to a fast start with an 8-6 win at first doubles courtesy of senior Markie Gustafson and junior Alyssa Daniel. Unfortunately, PSA (1-0) took the final two doubles contests, before locking up the win by scoring victories in five of the six singles matches. Junior Lauren Cowden secured Waynesburg's lone solo triumph at the number-five spot in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.

The final tally of the match didn't accurately portray how closely the day played out. Gustafson (second), sophomore Amanda Hooker (third) and sophomore Rachel Wilson (fourth) all took their respective singles matches to third-and-deciding sets, before coming up just short of victory. Waynesburg will look to return to its winning ways on Saturday, Sept. 7, when PAC rival Washington & Jefferson comes to town for a 9 a.m. showdown.
