HUNTINGDON, Pa. (Sept. 6) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer squared off with undefeated Juniata College on Friday night and nearly came out of Huntingdon with an impressive road win. The Yellow Jackets and Eagles battled through 90 minutes of regulation play and two overtimes, before the home team finally scored the winning tally in a 3-2 final.
After Juniata (3-0) opened up the scoring with a goal in the 31
st minute of play, the visiting Jackets (1-2) rebounded with a pair of second-half goals that gave them a 2-1 lead. Sophomore
Karleigh Murphey tied the match at 1-1 after chipping the ball over the head of the home keeper during the 47
th minute of action. Waynesburg grabbed its first and only lead of the game during the 71
st minute of play, when junior
Natalie Abraham fired in her team-leading third goal of 2013 to stake her squad to a one-goal advantage.
Unfortunately, Juniata tied the game up at 2-2 less than three minutes later and neither team was able to score over the final minutes of regulation. After a scoreless first overtime period, the Eagles completed their comeback just before the end of 110
th minute.
Sophomore
Ciara Scott started in net for Waynesburg and made four saves in defeat. Juniata held a sizeable 22-to-six advantage in total shots on the day, but the difference in shots on goal was a much closer seven-to-five margin in favor of the host team. The Eagles also attempted 12 corner kicks, to just one try by the Jackets.
Waynesburg will look to get back on the winning track on Wednesday, Sept. 11, when they hit the road for a game at Frostburg State. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
