Men's basketball takes tough loss at Westminster

Yellow Jackets fall 96-90

Box Score

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Jan. 11) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team dropped a 96-90 decision to the Westminster Titans in a high scoring contest Saturday afternoon in New Wilmington, Pa.

Both teams put together fine offensive showings at the Buzz Ridl Gymnasium in the Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup. Waynesburg (7-8, 2-3) shot 41.7 percent (30-for-72) from the field and knocked down 21-of-30 free throws, but Westminster (2-11, 1-3) put together its best shooting performance of the year by hitting on 52.4 percent (33-of-63) of its tries from the field.

Things started out well for Waynesburg as it built a 16-10 lead that was completed when junior forward Thomas Ellis converted a pair of free throws. Westminster then went on a 13-to-two run to grab a 23-18 edge. The Titans' hot shooting continued throughout the first half and the home team took a 44-37 halftime advantage into the locker room.

Westminster continued to hold the lead for the majority of the second half, but the Jackets managed to tie the contest on two occasions, before finally regaining the lead at 79-78 with a Jacob Fleegle free throw at the 5:06 mark. Unfortunately, the visitors' slim edge was short-lived, as the Titans rattled off the next eight points to grab an 88-81 advantage with 2:15 to play. Westminster salted the game away from that point on and didn't let the Jackets get closer than four points in the waning moments.

Ellis led Waynesburg offensively with a team-best 20 points, including an 11-for-13 effort at the free throw line. Sophomore Christian Koroly racked up 16 points, which included four made three-point baskets. Fleegle added 16 markers as well for the Orange and Black. Junior Tyler Miller pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds in the loss.

The Jackets will look to get back into the win column, when they head to Thiel to face the Tomcats on Wednesday, Jan. 15. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
