WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 8) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team scored early and often during its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match with Chatham on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets built up a 4-0 halftime lead en route to a 5-0 win over the Cougars.
Four different Jackets (5-5-2, 1-1) scored in the victory, including junior
Karleigh Murphey, who notched the eventual game-winning goal just before the 15-minute mark of the first half. Senior
Becky Hotek notched an assist on the score. Waynesburg blew the game open over a five-minute stretch during the latter portion of the opening period.
Sophomore
Rachel Ball got things going by taking a feed from freshman
Sara Hackman and beating the Chatham (3-8, 0-2) keeper during the 37
th minute of play. Sophomore
Chelsey Withers notched an assist during the 39
th minute when she found senior teammate
Erica Nordlund to put Waynesburg ahead 3-0. The Yellow Jackets found the back of the net one more time with three minutes remaining until halftime thanks to an unassisted tally from Hackman.
Waynesburg closed the scoring during the 68
th minute when Murphey picked up her second goal of the game and fifth of the season. Senior
Taylor Bombalski assisted on the score.
Junior
Ciara Scott and freshmen
Marian Chearney and
Heather Fraser combined to pitch the shutout. Scott picked up two saves in net, while Fraser stopped Chatham's only other shot on goal. Waynesburg out-shot the opposition by a 21-to-six margin.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 11, when they head to Greenville, Pennsylvania for a PAC showdown with Thiel. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
