WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 6) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team put together its best shooting half of the 2014-15 season to turn a tight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup with Grove City into a 70-55 victory.
The Yellow Jackets (2-5, 1-1) never trailed in their showdown with Grove City (4-3, 1-1). Senior
Kenny Klase opened the day's scoring by knocking down a three-pointer 1:23 into the contest. Waynesburg built up leads as large as 11 points (25-14) before GCC went on a 10-0 run over the final 5:27 of the opening period to bring up the halftime score of 25-24.
The stoppage of play seemed to swing momentum back into the home team's favor as the Jackets opened the final 20 minutes of action with an 8-0 run that put the Jackets up 33-24. The Wolverines responded with back-to-back baskets to make the score 33-28, but that was as close as GCC came to completing its comeback.
A three-pointer by senior forward
Jason Propst with 16:18 remaining in the game kicked off a 9-0 Waynesburg surge that concluded with back-to-back baskets from senior wing
Thomas Ellis. By the time there was 13:17 showing on the clock, the Jackets had run out to a 42-28 advantage.
The Jacket attack didn't relent and eventually built up a pair of 20-point leads, including a 70-50 advantage with 2:24 remaining in the contest. The Orange and Black closed out the contest to score its first PAC victory of the season.
The winning squad shot 68 percent (17-of-25) in half number two to run away from the Wolverines. Waynesburg also shot five-of-nine from three-point range and connected on six-of-nine tries from the foul line.
Propst racked up a game-high 15 points to lead the Waynesburg offense. Ellis chipped in 14 points off the bench, while Klase and junior
D.J. Ritchie added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Jackets play their third-straight home game on Monday, Nov. 8, when Pitt Greensburg comes to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse for a non-PAC game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
