WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 26) – The Waynesburg University baseball team split a home seven-inning doubleheader against visiting Grove City College on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets won game one 3-0, but the Wolverines took game two by the same score.

Sophomore starting pitcher Brian Resnik continued his dominance over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponents in game one by throwing a complete-game shutout. He allowed just four hits, while striking out four and walking one batter. The Jackets' ace picked up his conference-leading seventh win and seventh complete game on the season, while lowering his ERA to an impressive 2.64.

Waynesburg (14-21,10-9) tallied its first run of game one in the first inning when freshman shortstop Nathan Mori brought in junior right fielder Eric Crum on an RBI single. Crum added an RBI double in the seventh inning and finished the day going two-for-four at the dish. Mori finished game one two-for-three with a run scored and two stolen bases. He also reached base by being hit by a pitch.

The Jackets scored their second run in the fifth inning when freshman designated hitter Jonathon Kletzli reached first base on a passed ball and throwing error by Grove City's catcher, and Mori came around to score. The Orange and Black tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning, when junior leftfielder Ben Shorthouse scored on Crum's RBI double. Shorthouse finished game one two-for-three with a double Senior catcher Marc Timmons went for two-for-two at the plate, and also reached base in the sixth inning by way of catcher's interference.

The Jacket defense did not record an error behind Resnik, who finished the game with only 73 pitches thrown. After Grove City led off the game with a base hit, Resnik retired eight-straight Wolverine batters. He also finished the game by retiring eight hitters in a row.

The Wolverines returned the favor in game two, scoring all of their runs in the first inning off Waynesburg sophomore starting pitcher Connor Furwa. Freshman Colton Lippencott kept his team in the contest by piling up six scoreless innings of relief. The Waynesburg Central High School graduate struck out three batters and only allowed three hits. After walking the first batter he faced, Lippencott retired the next seven batters in a row and did not allow back-to-back batters to reach base for the entirety of his appearance.

The Waynesburg offense squandered an opportunity to score in the fourth inning, when sophomore first baseman Matt Bensinger grounded out with runners on the corners. The Jackets also missed out with runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively. In the bottom of the seventh, Kletzli led off the inning with a walk. Bensinger followed with a single, but pinch-runner freshman Josh Hausler was tagged out trying to go from first to third base. Bensinger moved to third after Shorthouse reached second by way of a throwing error. Freshman pinch-hitters Jason Poland and Justin Davey were retired in order to end the game.

At the end of the day, Waynesburg found itself tied with Thomas More for fourth place in the conference standings at 10-9. The Saints own the PAC Tournament tiebreaker over the Jackets because of their series win earlier this season.

The Orange and Black will vie for their fifth conference series victory tomorrow, when the Jackets travel to Grove City, Pa. to compete in a single nine-inning game. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
