Box Score

GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 27) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Grove City on Sunday for a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest. The Yellow Jackets fell by the final score of 7-4.

After three scoreless innings, the host Wolverines (9-21, 7-14) struck for a run in the fourth and a second in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. The Jackets (14-22, 10-10) struck back by plating three runs in the top of the sixth to grab its only advantage of the day.

Senior catcher Marc Timmons got the rally started with a leadoff solo homerun. Junior second baseman Neal Yakopin followed with a walk and proceeded to steal third base. Two batters later, freshman shortstop Nathan Mori singled in Yakopin for the game-tying run. Two batters later, freshman designated hitter Jonathon Kletzli came up with a clutch two-out RBI double to put the visiting team up 3-2.

Waynesburg maintained its slim one-run edge until the bottom of the seventh, when some fielding issues and a pair of walks helped the Wolverines to plate four runs and take a 6-3 advantage. GCC added its final run of the day in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 7-3.

The visitors were able to cross home plate one last time when Timmons picked up his second RBI on the day, when Roman scored during a fielder's choice.

Timmons connected on a team-high two hits and produced a Waynesburg-best two RBI in the loss. Freshman Luke Carter started and took the defeat on the mound after allowing four runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out two Wolverines on the day.

The Jackets are gearing up for a big final week of the regular season, which starts on Wednesday, April 30, with a nine-inning game at Washington & Jefferson. Waynesburg also has a combined three games against Westminster on Friday and Saturday. Following Sunday's loss, the Orange and Black sits in fifth place in the PAC standings. The top-four teams in the league qualify for the 2014 PAC Baseball Championship Tournament.
