Box Score 2 WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 5) – The Waynesburg University baseball team played host to Geneva College on Saturday for a seven-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. Both ends of the twin-bill turned out to be skillfully played contests with the Yellow Jackets taking game one 1-0, and the Golden Tornadoes rebounding to come back and grab game two 3-2.
The opener wasn't decided until the bottom of the seventh inning, when the Jackets (9-13,5-2) expertly pieced together the game's only run. Senior catcher
Marc Timmons led off with a single and was pinch-run for by junior
Kyle Weyand. Sophomore pinch-hitter
Tyler Rubasky moved Weyand into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, to set up junior right fielder
Eric Crum, who smacked a walk-off single that gave the home team its fifth win out of its first six PAC contests.
Sophomore
Brian Resnik was outstanding on the mound for the victors. The ace of the Jacket staff earned his second complete-game win of the week by scattering four hits and a walk over six shutout innings. He logged five strikeouts during his 81-pitch masterpiece.
The Jackets were primed to sweep the doubleheader after jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the late contest. Freshman shortstop
Nathan Mori opened the scoring by smacking an RBI single that plated senior centerfielder
Clay Roman in the bottom of the first inning. Waynesburg doubled its advantage in the second thanks to junior second baseman
Neal Yakopin, who scored junior third baseman
Jordan Truscott with a run-producing single.
Unfortunately, Geneva (7-16, 3-7) was able to cool off the Jacket bats, while simultaneously finding its offensive rhythm with a run each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Waynesburg had a shot to move the game into extra innings after Yakopin led off with a single and was replaced by freshman pinch-runner
Josh Hausler. Back-to-back productive outs put Hausler at third base, but he was stranded there to end the contest.
Freshman
Luke Carter pitched well enough to earn the win after giving up all three runs on seven hits and a walk over 6.1 innings pitched. Freshman Derek Zavatsky faced three batters in the top of the seventh and struck out two of them.
Six different Jackets recorded at least two hits each during the split, including Crum, who connected on a team-best three base knocks, two of which were doubles. Both teams played fantastic defense, as just one error, which was committed by Geneva, was posted on the day.
The Jackets and Golden Tornadoes will conclude the three-game season series on Monday, when they meet up for a nine-inning showdown in Beaver Falls. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
