Volleyball opens up 2014 season

Waynesburg goes 1-1 in day one of Bearcat Challenge

(Aug. 29) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team opened up its 2014 schedule on Friday at the Bearcat Challenge, which was hosted by Saint Vincent College. The Yellow Jackets fell 3-0 in their season opener against Allegheny College, before rebounding with a 3-0 win against Pitt Greensburg in the late contest.
 
The Jackets (1-1) suffered their first loss of the year by the set scores of 25-16, 25-7, 25-17. Junior outside hitter Kourtney Skinner posted a team-high five kills in the setback, while sophomore Morgan Newbauer recorded a squad-best 13 assists. Junior Jessica Dorazio paced Waynesburg's defensive efforts with a Jacket-best nine digs.
 
Waynesburg secured its first victory of 2014 by posting the set scores of 26-24, 25-22 25-15. Skinner again led the attack, this time posting a team-high mark of 12 kills. Dorazio just missed out on a double-double with eight kills and 16 digs. Newbauer greatly improved on her earlier showing by going off for 27 assists.
 
The Jackets will wrap up their two-day stay in Latrobe with matches on Saturday against Penn State Behrend and Franciscan. Start times are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
