Box Score DEFIANCE, Ohio (Aug. 30) – First-year head coach
Laura Heethuis wasted little time in earning her first win as a collegiate head coach, when she led her Waynesburg University women's soccer team to Defiance College's Purple and Gold Classic on Friday. The visiting Yellow Jackets scored a pair of first-half goals and went on to a 3-1 victory over the host Yellow Jackets.
Heethuis wasn't the only newcomer to the Waynesburg women's program to have a big day in Ohio. Freshman
Nikki Davis tallied her team's first two scores of the year during the fifth and 39
th minute of the first half, respectively. Both unassisted scores came off corner kicks.
After Defiance (0-1) cut its deficit in half with a goal in the 60
th minutes, junior
Karleigh Murphey sealed the win with her first tally of 2014, which came off an assist from yet another newcomer, freshman
Melanie Burchfield.
The Orange and Black defense did a terrific job of stifling the Defiance offense, which managed to take just six total shots, two of which were on goal. Junior third-year starting keeper
Ciara Scott needed to make just one save to preserve the win.
Waynesburg will look to make it 2-0 on Saturday, Aug. 30, when it takes on Heidelberg at the P & G Classic. Start time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
