COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 10) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team traveled to Ursinus College on Saturday to take part in the North/South Duals, which featured several nationally ranked programs. The Yellow Jackets, who entered the day ranked 22nd in Division III by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, went 3-1 over a busy day of action.

The Yellow Jackets (12-5) opened the morning by upsetting number-20 Stevens Institute of Technology 22-15, before dropping a 24-15 final against number-nine Delaware Valley. Waynesburg bounced back with a 31-18 triumph over Springfield (Mass.) and received a 60-0 forfeit from Hunter (N.Y.).

The day's biggest individual accomplishment was turned in by senior Luke Lohr, who picked up victory number 100 of his decorated collegiate career after going 3-0 in contested matches. His overall record currently stands at 101-21. Senior Sam Guidi also posted a flawless 3-0 mark and picked up a pin.

#22 Waynesburg 22, #20 Stevens Institute of Technology 15
The Yellow Jackets got their day rolling by improving to 5-3 against national top-25 opponents. After the Ducks (7-4) opened the match with a win at 125 pounds, sophomore 133-pounder Filippo Crivelli got Waynesburg on the board with a 5-3 overtime decision.

Sophomore Dominic Ciaramella put the Jackets up 6-3 with a 6-3 decision at 141 pounds, before Lohr extended the lead to 9-3 with a decision at 149 pounds. Stevens tied the match with a fall at 157 pounds, but Guidi gave his team the lead back with a 12-9 victory at 165 pounds.

Sophomore Ryan Shank continued his recent hot streak by posting a 10-0 major decision at 174 to expand Waynesburg's advantage to 16-9. The Ducks rebounded with a decision at 184, but the match was ultimately decided at 197 pounds, where senior Gennaro Bonaventura picked up a forfeit that made the score 22-12. The Ducks closed out the match with a win at heavyweight.

#9 Delaware Valley 24, #22 Waynesburg 15
Match number two of the day pitted the Jackets against traditional national powerhouse DVC (8-2). Junior Gordan Bieber nearly pulled a major upset at 125 pounds, where he faced off with sixth-ranked junior Connor Kirkegard. Bieber battled the Aggie standout, but dropped a 6-4 decision.

Delaware Valley extended its lead to 9-0 with a fall 133 pounds, but Waynesburg showed its mettle with four-straight victories. Ciaramella got things started with a pin in 3:23 at 141 pound. He was followed by Lohr, who scored a 5-4 win at 149 to tie the match at 9-9. Back-to-back decisions by freshman Derek Hull and Guidi put upset-minded Waynesburg up 15-9 going into the 174-pound bout.

Unfortunately, DVC won the final four weights of the match to take the win. Like Bieber, junior heavyweight Greg Kumer didn't blink while facing a highly ranked opponent. Kumer battled Zach Roseberry, the number-four 285-pounder in the country, before falling 5-2.
