BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Jan. 21) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night when it made a trip to Geneva for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. The Yellow Jackets trailed by just two points at halftime, but couldn't overcome the Golden Tornadoes, who scored an 81-69 victory.
Geneva (7-10, 4-4) scored the first six points of the evening and never trailed over the length of the contest. Waynesburg (9-8, 5-3) shook off the slow start and cut its deficit down to a single point on multiple occasions. By the time the final buzzer of the first half sounded, the Jackets trailed 38-36 going into the locker room.
The Tornadoes came out hot in period number two and used a 9-2 run over the first 3:46 of play to grab a 47-38 advantage. Geneva shot an impressive 60 percent (12-of-20) from the floor and connected on 17-of-20 free throw tries (85 percent) to run away from the Jackets, who shot a respectable 45 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes of play. Unfortunately, the Orange and Black couldn't keep up with the opposition at the charity stripe, where the Jackets connected on just four-of-10 attempts in the half.
The senior trio of
Jason Propst,
Kenny Klase and
Thomas Ellis all reached double digits in scoring for Waynesburg. Propst posted a team-high 13 points, while Klase and Ellis added 12 and 11, respectively. Both teams' solid shooting efforts yielded little in the way of impressive numbers in terms of rebounding. Waynesburg totaled 26 boards for the night, while Geneva yanked down 31 rebounds.
The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 24, when they make a road trip to Thomas More. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
