BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Jan. 21) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team got back on the winning track Wednesday night, when it traveled to Geneva College. The Yellow Jackets never trailed against the Golden Tornadoes and scored an 86-68 victory.
Sophomore
Haley Delaney opened the scoring for the Jackets (8-8, 5-4) by knocking down a game-opening basket. Geneva (4-12, 2-7) tied things up with a pair of free throws to make the score 2-2. Waynesburg took early control of the contest with a 13-3 run that concluded with a jumper by freshman forward
Addy Knetzer. By the time Knetzer knocked down the shot, Waynesburg led 15-5 after 7:42 of action.
Waynesburg built up several leads as large as 16 points over the first half, before settling for a 35-20 halftime advantage. The Jackets didn't slow down over the final 20 minutes of play and built up leads as large as 22 points (65-43) before picking up the crucial victory.
The Orange and Black was led by senior guard
Rebecca Kerr, who dropped a team-high 18 points on eight-of-10 shooting. Junior guard
Lauren Blair contributed 12 points, three assists and four steals to the winning effort, while sophomore Guard
Katie Gehlmann came off the bench to chip in 11 points. The Jackets shot 51.5 percent from the floor and held a 42-31 advantage in rebounding.
Waynesburg returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 24, when it makes a road trip to Thomas More. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
