Match Results (.pdf)GREENVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 30) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team traveled to Thiel College on Friday night for the two teams' annual Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rivalry match. Senior
Luke Lohr notched a technical fall win at 149 pounds, but the dominant individual performance wasn't nearly enough when it came to the team score, as the Tomcats took the contest 22-14.
Thiel (12-6, 2-0) pulled out a 2-1 win at 125 pounds that was decided by a riding point to take an early 3-0 lead. Yellow Jacket (15-7, 1-1) sophomore
Filippo Crivelli answered the victory with a 6-1 triumph at 133 pounds that tied the match at 3-3.
A pin at 141 pounds pushed the home squad ahead 9-3, but Lohr's 20-3 victory (5:30) trimmed his team's deficit down to just one point at 9-8. The Jackets welcomed an old familiar face to the starting lineup as senior
Chris Milligan, who rejoined the team in the spring semester after not initially coming out for the squad, made his varsity return. Things started well for the former PAC champion as he notched the first takedown against nationally recognized Sean Byham. However, those were the only points Milligan scored in his return match, which ended in a 5-2 decision.
Trailing by four (12-8), the Jackets turned to senior
Sam Guidi to keep them in the match. Guidi faced off with another talented senior, Thiel's Brandon Collins, in a battle of nationally recognized opponents. Guidi showed poise in a 1-0 victory to stave off a late charge by Collins and make the score 12-11.
Following Guidi's win, Thiel took control of the match with wins at 174, 184 and 197 pounds. Waynesburg senior
Patrick Jennings scored first in his bout at 184, but a late takedown doomed him in a 3-1 decision loss. Orange and Black senior
Gennaro Bonaventura battled another nationally recognized Thiel veteran in Jerrold Roosa and held his own against the senior. Sadly for the Jackets, Bonaventura's 2-0 loss sealed the victory for the home team.
Junior heavyweight
Greg Kumer was able to end the night on a high note for Waynesburg by scoring the only takedown in a 4-3 victory at heavyweight.
The Jackets' loss in Greenville was their first defeat at the hands of the Tomcats since the 2009-10 season. The defeat also snapped Waynesburg's 10-match winning streak against PAC opposition.
Waynesburg returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 5, when it plays host to Penn State Dubois. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
