LATROBE, Pa. (Jan. 7) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team traveled to Saint Vincent College on Wednesday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown with the second-place Bearcats. The Yellow Jackets fell 85-73 to the home-standing Cats.
Saint Vincent (11-1, 5-0) opened up early leads of 6-0 and 12-2 and never trailed on the night. A three-pointer from junior forward
Heather Davis cut SVC's lead down to just two points (18-16) with 9:13 left to play in the first half. Another jumper from Davis closed out the scoring in the first half, which ended with the Bearcats holding a 38-31 lead.
Davis continued her hot shooting by dropping in a pair of baskets sandwiched around a Bearcat basket to pull Waynesburg (4-7, 1-3) to within five points of the lead at 40-35. Sophomore
Haley Delaney cut the deficit down to just four (42-38) with 17:33 left to play. Unfortunately, that's as close as the Jackets came to pulling off the victory.
Davis and senior guard
Rebecca Kerr tied for the Waynesburg lead with 14 points each. Junior guard
Lauren Blair added 10 points and a team-high four assists.
Waynesburg suffered the loss despite a sizeable 46-32 advantage in total rebounds. The Jackets grabbed 23 offensive boards on the night, while giving up just nine.
The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, when they host Bethany. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
