CLEVELAND, Ohio (Oct. 10) – The Waynesburg University football team traveled to Case Western Reserve on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets came up on the short end of a 45-14 final score.
Waynesburg (2-4, 1-3) fell behind 35-0 late in the first half, but were able to break up the shutout just before halftime, when freshman quarterback
Jake Dougherty connected with senior running back
Willie Leavell on a six-yard touchdown pass. Senior kicker
Scott Lewis connected on the ensuing PAT attempt to cut the score to 35-7 with 39 seconds remaining in the half, which was also the score at the break.
After the Spartans (4-1, 4-0) tallied the first 10 points of half number two, the Jackets ended the scoring with their longest scoring play of the year. Freshman running back
Austin Wilson ripped off a 54-yard touchdown run with 3:40 showing on the game clock. Lewis posted the game's final score with his second extra point of the day.
Wilson was the game's second-leading rusher with 56 yards on two carries. Dougherty completed 16-of-31 passes for 104 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Junior
Kevin Barnes, Jr., pulled in a team-high five catches for a Jacket-best 72 yards.
Waynesburg's defense was paced by junior defensive lineman
Zach Machuga, who recorded a game-high nine tackles, including six solo stops. He also forced a fumble.
The Jackets will look to bounce back on Saturday, Oct. 17, when they return to host Westminster. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
