Men's hoops squares off with Calvin

Durham goes for 27 against Crusaders

DELAWARE, Ohio (Nov. 20) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team hit the road on Friday to take part in the Great Lakes Challenge, which is being hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University. The Yellow Jackets faced off with Calvin College and fell by an 83-77 final score.

Waynesburg (0-2) didn't seem intimidated by the Crusaders (1-0), who received votes in the latest D3Hoops.com national top-25 poll. The Jackets held multiple slim leads throughout the first half. However, a big run by Calvin allowed it to build advantages as large as 10 points (37-27). Waynesburg rebounded to trim its halftime deficit down to 39-33.

The Jackets stuck right with Calvin throughout period number two and were finally able to pull even with the opposition (68-68) on a basket by senior guard B.J. Durham with just under five minutes remaining on the game clock. Unfortunately, an 8-1 run by the Crusaders that lasted roughly 2:30 stifled any comeback attempt for the Orange and Black.

Though it came in defeat, Durham put together one of his best games as a collegiate player. The veteran poured in a game-high 27 points on eight-of-19 shooting from the floor. He also made eight-of-nine attempts from the free throw line.

Senior wing D.J. Ritchie was the second of four double-digit scorers for Waynesburg. Not only did he contribute 17 points on the evening, but added 11 rebounds for his first double-double as a Yellow Jacket. Senior forward Nate Labishak recorded an efficient 11 points on three-of-four shooting, while freshman Dylan O'Hara came off the bench to chip in 10 points.

Waynesburg will play its second game in the Great Lakes Challenge tomorrow, when it faces Alma. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
