PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Nov. 24) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team traveled to Pittsburgh to face off with Carnegie Mellon on Tuesday night. The Yellow Jackets trailed by just three points after the first quarter, but the Tartans pulled away in the second en route to an 82-56 victory.
CMU (4-0) scored the first six points of the game and never relinquished the lead. Trailing 23-14 with just over a minute remaining in the first period, Waynesburg (1-3) showed its fortitude by scoring the final six points of the quarter to close to within a single basket (23-20). Junior guard
Kassidy O'Keefe and junior forward
Haley Delaney fueled the run with two and four points, respectively.
Unfortunately, the Tartans put together 27-12 second quarter that gave them a 50-32 lead that set up the home team's victory. Both teams' scoring efforts slowed way down over the second half, concluding with an 11-to-8 fourth quarter that favored CMU.
Sophomore forward
Addy Knetzer came off the bench to score a Waynesburg-high 12 points. O'Keefe chipped in 12 points in the loss, while sophomore
Katie Gehlmann went for seven points and a team-high eight rebounds. Senior point guard
Lauren Blair swiped away a game-high five steals.
One bright spot for Waynesburg was its protection of the basketball. The Jackets coughed up just six turnovers against Carnegie Mellon.
The Jackets will enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to the court on Saturday, Nov. 28. Waynesburg heads to Allegheny College for a 1 p.m. road contest against the Gators.
