(Nov. 4) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team welcomed Division II Shippensburg University to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse for its first dual action of the 2015-16 season on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets and Raiders split the match's five bouts, but Shippensburg scored bonus points in four of its victories, including three pins, en route to a 26-15 win.
After the visiting team (1-0) struck first with a technical fall win at 125 pounds, Waynesburg (0-1) bounced back with a 5-2 decision win by senior
Gordan Bieber at 133 pounds. Junior
Filippo Crivelli gave the Jackets their first-and-only lead of the evening after notching a 6-3 triumph at 141 pounds.
Unfortunately, Shippensburg scored the eventual match-winning points during a three-bout streak of victories that included pins at 149 and 165. By the time the 174-pound bout was on the mat, the Raiders held a 20-6 advantage.
Waynesburg snapped out of its funk thanks to freshman
Mike Millero, who battled hard for seven minutes to notch an 8-5 win in his collegiate debut. Junior
Ryan Shank made it back-to-back victories for the Orange and Black after nearly picking up a major decision in a 7-1 victory at 184 pounds.
After Shippensburg picked up one final pin at 197, freshman Jake Evans brought the fans to their feet with an impressive 2-0 win at heavyweight. What made the decision so notable, was the fact that Evans was giving up over 50 pounds to his opponent, but was able to pick up an escape less than one second into the second period and then ride out the entirety of the third period for the riding point.
The Jackets will kick off the tournament portion of their schedule on Saturday, when they head to the Monarch Invitational, which is being hosted by Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Start time is scheduled for 9 a.m.
