WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 18) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team ran its current winning streak to four games on Wednesday night after defeating visiting Geneva 88-53. The Yellow Jackets cemented their spot as the number-four team in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) with the victory. Waynesburg's four-game run of success is the second-longest current streak in the conference (Thomas More -24).
Things started slowly for the home team (14-10, 11-6), as Geneva (4-20, 2-15) led 9-8 after 3:26 of play. The Yellow Jackets grabbed control of the game at that point by putting together a 14-1 run that lasted roughly five minutes and put Waynesburg ahead 22-10. The Jackets slowly built on their lead over the remainder of the opening period and went into the locker room with a 43-21 advantage.
Geneva was able to cut its deficit down to less than 20 points over the final 20 minutes of play, but the Orange and Black rebounded to build leads as large as 38 points before closing out the victory.
Waynesburg was led by senior guard
Rebecca Kerr, who connected on eight-of-12 shots from the field and notched a game-high 18 points. Freshman forward
Addy Knetzer poured in 16 points and tied for the team high with nine rebounds. Senior guard
Hayden Giuliani chipped in 13 points, while junior forward
Maura Bobby added 11 to the winning effort.
Waynesburg out-rebounded Geneva by a 58-to-33 margin. The Yellow Jackets also held a major advantage in shooting percentage (43.6 percent to 25.9 percent) from the floor.
The Jackets wrap up the 2014-15 regular season on Saturday, when they celebrate senior day. Waynesburg squares off with Chatham for a 1:30 p.m. matchup.
