(Feb. 20) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team celebrated senior night at its final dual match of the season on Friday, when Division II Alderson Broaddus came to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The Yellow Jackets won eight-of-10 bouts on the night and capped their regular season schedule with a 33-7 win over the Battlers.
Prior to the start of the match, six Jackets (17-7) were recognized before wrestling in front of their home crowd for the final time. Five of those individuals got the start, with four of them picking up victories. Junior
Gordan Bieber got things going with a 6-3 decision at 125 pounds to put his team up 3-0. It was the first of four-straight wins for the home team that gave Waynesburg a 21-0 lead.
After sophomore
Filippo Crivelli received a forfeit at 133 pounds, freshman 141-pounder D.J. Grindle recorded the fastest pin of the night by sticking his opponent in 1:29. Senior 149-pounder
Luke Lohr added a pin of his own, which came in 4:55. The victory extended Lohr's career wins record to 113 victories.
Alderson Broaddus (3-7) got on the board with a major decision at 157 pounds. Senior
Sam Guidi got Waynesburg back on the winning track with a physical 10-7 decision at 165 pounds, before the Battlers earned their final points of the match at 174 pounds with a decision to cut the score to 24-7.
The Jackets closed out the match with three-straight decision victories. Senior
Patrick Jennings got things rolling with a solid 6-0 victory at 184 pounds. Senior
Gennaro Bonaventura battled to an 8-4 triumph at 197 pounds, before junior heavyweight
Greg Kumer used a late takedown to secure a 3-0 win to wrap up the victory.
With the regular season concluded, Waynesburg turns its focus towards the individual postseason. The Yellow Jackets will take part in the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Tournament on Sunday, March 1, at Messiah College. Start time is scheduled for 9 a.m.
