Waynesburg drops two to Clarkson

Yellow Jackets suffer losses by the final scores of 2-1 and 5-0

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 13) – The Waynesburg University baseball team's usually effective bats were surprisingly quiet on Thursday, March 12, when the Yellow Jackets played a doubleheader against Clarkson (N.Y.) University at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Yellow Jackets dropped both ends of the twin-bill, losing game one 2-1 and dropping the second contest 5-0.

The Jackets (2-7) got their only run of the opener when sophomore catcher Ben Miller doubled in sophomore third baseman Cameron Bernhardt in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Unfortunately, the Golden Knights (2-0) plated a run in the top of the seventh to go up 2-1. Waynesburg had a chance to tie the contest up in the bottom of the seventh after putting runners on first and third with just one out on the board. Unfortunately, a game-ending double-play halted the Jacket comeback.

The loss overshadowed a second-straight strong outing on the pitcher's mound from sophomore Luke Carter (1-1). Carter allowed two runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out four Knight hitters. Waynesburg suffered the loss despite out-hitting the opposition 9-5.

Game two got off to a similar start as the first three innings failed to yield any runs for either squad. Clarkson scored the eventual game-winning run as part of a two-score fourth inning. The Knights added three insurance runs in the fifth to seal the deal.

Junior Brian Resnik (1-1) got off to a fine start on the hill, before struggling down the stretch of his five-inning start. He allowed all five runs on seven hits and no walks. Sophomore Colton Lippencott did what he could to keep comeback hopes alive by posting a scoreless frame of work.

Waynesburg will try to end its spring break trip on a high note on Friday, March 13, when it faces Albion. First pitch of the morning doubleheader is scheduled for 9 a.m.
