Softball closes spring break trip

Waynesburg drops 11-4 decision to Waldorf

TITUSVILLE, Fla. (March 13) – The Waynesburg University softball team closed its 2015 spring break trip with a single seven-inning game on Friday. The Yellow Jackets squared off with Waldorf College and dropped the contest 11-4.

Waynesburg (1-9) found itself in a deep hole after giving up six runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Yellow Jackets managed to cut the deficit in half with three runs in the top of the third. Sophomore Mackenzie Smith, senior Haley Payne and freshman Cassie Hudson all notched RBI singles during the rally.

The Jackets' final run of the game came on a homerun by Payne in their half of the fifth inning. The Warriors (6-10) put the game out of reach with two runs in the third frame and three more in the fifth.

The two teams combined for 27 hits on the day, including 11 for Waynesburg. Payne and sophomore Demi Lewin led the Jacket offense with three hits and one run scored each. Payne posted a team-high two RBI, while senior Emily Sorton recorded a two-for-three effort at the dish.

Junior Stephanie Kotomski started and took the loss in the circle after giving up six runs, none of which were earned, over just 1.1 innings of work. Five Waynesburg errors led to a damaging nine unearned runs for Waldorf.

The Jackets return to action on Wednesday, March 18, when they are scheduled to host Franciscan for a doubleheader. First pitch is expected to be thrown at 3:30 p.m.
