WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 21) – The Waynesburg University softball team played its first home doubleheader of the 2015 season on Saturday against Mount Aloysius. After dropping the opener 2-0, the Jackets bounced back with a 3-1 win in game two.
Waynesburg (4-10) actually out-hit the Mounties (6-6) 5-3 in game one, but seven Jacket walks, including one that came with the bases loaded in the second inning, proved costly for the home team. The Orange and Black's best scoring opportunity of game one came in the sixth inning, when it managed to load the bases with two outs, before failing to come up with a crucial hit.
Senior
Haley Payne gave up just two hits, but walked seven opposing hitters over a 5.1-inning start for the Jackets. Junior
Cameron Grimes did a fine job in relief, as she allowed just one hit over 1.2 innings in the circle. Five different Waynesburg players picked up one hit each.
Game two featured perhaps the best pitching performance by a Yellow Jacket this season. Junior
Stephanie Kotomski managed to scatter nine hits over a seven-inning complete game to pick up the victory. She did not walk a batter and managed to stifle several Mt. Aloysius scoring opportunities.
Waynesburg opened the scoring in the top of the first, when Payne singled in sophomore
Demi Lewin. Mt. Aloysius tied the score with a run in the bottom of the second, but Grimes provided the game-deciding hit in the top of the fourth when her two-out double plated Payne and sophomore Ashley DeMarco to put her team up by the eventual final score of 3-1.
Payne went a perfect three-for-three at the dish in game two and accounted for the majority of Waynesburg's five hits in the victory.
The Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, March 24, when they play host to La Roche for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
