BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (March 30) – It was a bitter-sweet day on the diamond for the Waynesburg University baseball team on Monday. After rolling to a 10-0 win in game one of a doubleheader at Geneva College, the Yellow Jackets saw a 7-2 lead disappear in the seventh inning of an 8-7 loss to the Golden Tornadoes.
Waynesburg (5-11-1, 3-2), which recorded its third-straight PAC shutout in the opener, did the bulk of its damage in the top of the third inning. The Yellow Jackets sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs in the frame. Senior leftfielder
Ben Shorthouse connected on a two-run single, before sophomore first baseman
Jonathon Kletzli slapped a two-run double during the breakout inning.
Kletzli added a run-scoring single in the seventh to close out the game's scoring. The Jackets piled up the 10 runs on just seven hits during the victory. They also took advantage of 10 Geneva (8-9, 2-3) walks in the opener.
Sophomore
Luke Carter received more than enough run support, as he shut out Geneva during a complete-game effort. He gave up just two singles and walked two, while striking out six opposing hitters to secure the victory on the mound.
Waynesburg looked primed for a sweep after taking a five-run lead into the bottom of the last inning of the contest. Unfortunately, the Golden Tornadoes battled all the way back and ended the game on a three-run walk-off homerun.
Sophomore
Jacob Meyer got the start on the mound and scattered three runs on 10 hits and one walk over six innings of work. The Waynesburg bullpen gave up five runs in the seventh without recording an out.
The Jacket offense was led by Kletzli's four-for-seven effort at the plate over the two games. He gathered five RBI and two runs scored during the split.
Waynesburg is back in action on Tuesday, March 31, when it heads to Saint Vincent College for a seven-inning PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
