WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 4) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday night at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The Yellow Jackets dropped an 83-61 contest to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Washington & Jefferson in the quarterfinals of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Women's Basketball tournament.
The loss came after the Yellow Jackets (15-12) swept the two-game regular series with the Presidents (21-7), but were hampered by shooting woes throughout most of the contest. Waynesburg connected on just 25 percent of its attempts from the floor, while W&J found the mark on just under 40 percent of its tries (23-of-58).
The Presidents opened the contest with four-straight points, which were countered by a jumper by sophomore forward
Haley Delaney and a three-pointer by junior forward
Heather Davis that put the home team up 5-4. The two teams continued to trade the lead over the first few minutes of the game, before a 7-0 surge by W&J turned a slim 16-14 President advantage into a 23-14 hole that the Jackets were never able to recover from.
Waynesburg was able to pull to within four points (31-27) with 8:49 left to play in the first half. Unfortunately, W&J ended the period on an 18-6 run that gave the Presidents a 49-33 lead at halftime. The Jackets trailed by as many as 28 points in the second period, but to their credit, battled back to within 18 points of the lead before the final buzzer sounded.
Senior guard
Hayden Giuliani scored a team-high 11 points in her final collegiate contest, while classmate
Rebecca Kerr chipped in 10. Blair added nine points and a game-high seven assists to the Orange and Black effort.
W&J moves on to face Lebanon Valley in an ECAC South semifinal game on Saturday, March 7, at Albright College.
