Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 7) – The Waynesburg University baseball team opened its Spring Break trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a doubleheader sweep of the Penn State Altoona Lions. The Yellow Jackets won game one 6-2, and took game two by a score of 8-2.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Luke Carter took the hill for the Jackets in game one, which also served as the season opener for Waynesburg, and threw a complete game. He surrendered seven hits and two earned runs, while striking out five while only walking one.
Waynesburg (1-0) fell behind 2-0 in the second inning before scoring its first run in the third inning.
Eric Crum tripled with one out before scoring on a throwing error by the Lions' (0-2) catcher. The Jackets then put together a five run fifth inning – doing it all with two outs.
The rally began with
Nathan Mori and
Matt Bensinger notching base hits. Jonathan Kletzli singled in Mori to tie the score up at 2-2, before
Tyler Rubasky drew a walk to load the bases.
Ben Shorthouse was hit by a pitch and
Cameron Bernhardt drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 4-2.
Brent Williams, the designated hitter, then singled in two runs to make it 6-2.
Waynesburg took game two on the back of junior ace and 2014 All-PAC first-teamer,
Brian Resnik. The Burgettstown, Pennsylvania native pitched a complete game, becoming the second Jacket to do so on the day. Resnik struck out seven Lions and walked one, while giving up eight hits and two earned runs in his seven innings of work.
Waynesburg's offense was paced by sophomore transfer catcher Ben Miller and junior centerfielder
Matt Bensinger. Miller went three-for-four with a double, two runs batted in and two runs scored. Bensinger added a two-for-three effort with a double, a triple and two RBI
Designated hitter
Justin Davey chipped in a pair of RBI, while Kletzli and
Kyle Weyand plated a run each.
The Orange and Black will go for a third-straight victory against Loras (Iowa) tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in a single, nine-inning game.
