Bats explode in road win

Waynesburg defeats Grove City 20-4

GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 13) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Grove City College for a nine-inning Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest on Monday. The Yellow Jackets cranked out 25 hits and were helped out by five Wolverine errors during a 20-4 victory.

With the win, the Jackets (11-12-1, 9-3) remained in second place in the PAC standings. The victory also gave Waynesburg a 2-1 season series win over Grove City (9-14, 5-8).

The Jackets came flying out of the gate by scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning. The home team scored a run in the bottom of the first and added two more scores in the bottom third to pull to within four runs (7-3) of the lead. That was as close as the host squad came to completing a comeback.

Waynesburg put the game out of reach by plating a run in the fourth, five in the fifth, five in the sixth and one each in the eighth and ninth frames, respectively. Grove City ended its scoring with a tally in the fifth inning.

Seven different Waynesburg players posted at least two hits each. Sophomore shortstop Nathan Mori had a monster day at the plate, going five-for-six with a game-high four runs scored. Sophomore first baseman Jonathon Kletzli added a four-for-five effort and came a triple shy of the cycle with four runs scored and four RBI.

Junior centerfielder Matt Bensinger also drove in four runs, while going three-for-five with three runs scored. Junior leftfielder Ben Shorthouse scored three runs and stole a base.

The biggest beneficiary of the offensive explosion was junior starting pitcher Brian Resnik, who improved his record on the mound to 5-1. He allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on nine hits and a walk over seven innings of work. The righty standout piled up a season-high 11 strikeouts in the win.

Waynesburg is back in action on Tuesday, April 14, when it makes a road trip to Westminster. First pitch of the PAC doubleheader is scheduled for 2 p.m.
