WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 14) – Pitching took center stage during a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader between Waynesburg and visiting Grove City on Tuesday. The Wolverines took game one 2-1, before the Yellow Jackets bounced back with a 4-2 victory in the late contest.
The Wolverines (9-19, 3-9) struck first in the opener with a run in the top of the first inning. Waynesburg (9-19, 3-9) tied the game up when senior first baseman
Haley Payne launched her team-leading third homerun of the season in the bottom of the second.
Unfortunately, Payne's solo blast, which was also Waynesburg's only hit of the game, was the extent of the Jackets' offense in the opener. Grove City meanwhile picked up the game-winning run in the top of the fifth inning.
Junior
Cameron Grimes took the loss in the circle after yielding two runs on nine hits and one walk over 5.1 innings of work. She also struck out three in the defeat. Sophomore
Lyndi Gareis tossed 1.2 innings of one-hit relief to keep the Jackets within striking distances of victory.
Game two saw a completely different Jacket offense jump out to a 4-0 lead after two innings of play. Junior
Katey Potopenko delivered the first big blow of the game with a two-run triple in the opening frame. Grimes made the score 3-0 with a first-inning RBI single that plated Potopenko. Waynesburg tacked on its fourth run of the contest on a single and an error during the at-bat of senior
Theresa Soknich.
The pitching combination of Gareis and junior
Stephanie Kotomski made the four runs hold up in the victory. Gareis got the win after giving up an earned run on six hits and a walk over four innings of work. Kotomski logged a save after allowing one unearned run over the final three innings of action.
Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 15, when it hosts Point Park University for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
