Jackets win season finale

Blair's free position goal caps 9-8 ORLC victory

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 20) – Junior Lauren Blair provided one of the most memorable moments of both the 2015 season and the eight-year history of the Waynesburg University women's lacrosse program. That moment was a last-second free-position shot that found the back of the net and provided the game-winning point, as the Yellow Jackets defeated Franklin 9-8 on Monday.

Blair, who is in her first year with the team, broke up an 8-8 tie with just over one second left to play in the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) matchup. That score helped set a new program record for season wins (5-9) and ended Waynesburg's first year in the ORLC with a 3-6 conference mark.

Franklin (3-8, 3-6) opened the scoring with a goal 53 seconds into the contest. Sophomore Holly Bachman pulled her team into the lead with two unanswered goals before nine minutes of the contest had expired. The Grizzlies tied the score at 2-2 before sophomore Jess Rains split the pipes twice to move Waynesburg ahead 4-2 with 17:43 remaining in the first half. Franklin fired back with the final two scores of the period to bring about the halftime score of 4-4.

Momentum swung back into the Orange and Black's favor just 14 seconds into the second half thanks to junior Makayla Vidosh's first goal of the day. The Yellow Jackets re-established a two-point advantage (6-4) following Rains' third score of the match.

A pair of goals by the visiting team tied the score back up at 6-6 with 19:14 left to play. The back-and-forth match continued after Blair and Vidosh scored back-to-back goals to push their team back into the lead at 8-6. Franklin made one last run at victory with a pair of tallies that tied things up at 8-8 with 3:22 left to play. However, a late foul called on Franklin just before the end of regulation gave Blair the chance to cash in on her game-winning shot.

Along with a balanced scoring attack that featured four players scoring at least two goals each, senior goalkeeper JoHanna Phillips was solid in net. The veteran made eight saves over 60 minutes in net.
