PITTSBURGH, Pa. (April 25) – The Waynesburg University softball team ended 2015 on a high note by putting together a sweep of fellow Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) member Chatham on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets scored a 7-0 shutout in game one, before closing out the season with a 6-5 triumph.
The opener featured a fantastic pitching performance from junior
Stephanie Kotomski, who notched the complete-game win. She allowed just three hits and didn't walk a batter while improving to 6-11 on the year.
The Yellow Jackets (12-26, 6-12) opened the scoring when a walk to sophomore second baseman
Ashley Demarco allowed senior outfielder
Theresa Soknich to trot home with the eventual game-winning run in the third inning. The next batter, junior designated player
Katey Potopenko also drew a run-scoring walk to double her team's advantage. Another pitching miscue, a wild pitch, allowed senior first baseman
Haley Payne to sprint home and score the game's third run.
The fourth inning brought in run number four, which was posted when senior centerfielder
Emily Sorton crossed home plate by way of an error. The day's scoring concluded in the seventh. Another Chatham (3-23, 0-18) error brought freshman
Cassie Hudson home to score, before Potopenko and freshman
Amanda Brown each recorded RBI singles.
Game two saw the Jackets strike first for a second-straight game. Waynesburg posted a three-spot in the first inning on a Demarco RBI single and a two-run error. Chatham tied the contest with a three-spot in the bottom of the fourth, before taking the lead with a run in the fifth.
The Yellow Jackets regained its advantage in the top of the sixth. Junior Jess Dorazio drove in Soknich before Payne capped her team's 2015 scoring with a bang. The veteran infielder teed off on her team-leading fifth homerun of the year to put her team up 6-4.
The Cougars managed to put up a run in their half of the seventh, but junior pitcher
Cameron Grimes slammed the door on the comeback try to complete the save. Grimes closed out the win for sophomore
Lyndi Gareis, who allowed three earned runs on five hits and no walks over five innings of work.
Soknich paced the Waynesburg offense with a team-high five hits in eight at-bats. She also scored three runs over the sweep. Payne went three-for-six with a team-high two RBI and a Jacket-best four runs scored.
