WAYNESBURG, Pa. (May 1) – The Waynesburg University baseball team kicked off their final regular season series by hosting Presidents' Athletic Conference opponent Thomas More College on Friday afternoon. In spite of a strong pitching performance from junior
Jacob Meyer, the Yellow Jackets fell to the Saints, 7-2.
The contest was scoreless until the third inning, when a bases-loaded hit by pitch forced home the game's first run. It was the only run of the game allowed by Meyer, who put together arguably his finest outing of the season. Meyer pitched seven innings and scattered six hits, while limiting the Saint offense to just one run. He also surrendered one walk and two hit batsmen, while fanning two Saint hitters.
Once Meyer exited, Thomas More expanded its lead by scoring twice in the eighth and four times in the ninth to seal the victory.
Waynesburg's only scoring play of the game came in the ninth inning. Sophomore first baseman
Jonathon Kletzli led off the inning with a single. After a pop up, sophomore catcher
Ben Miller crushed a two-run home run to left field. The bomb was Miller's team-leading fifth home run of the season, which was also good for fifth place among conference hitters.
With the victory, Thomas More improved to 27-8 overall. The first-place Saints are also 18-4 in PAC play. Waynesburg falls to 17-16-1 overall, with a 15-7 mark in conference action. The Yellow Jackets are one game behind second-place Thiel.
Thomas More and Waynesburg will meet again on Saturday. First pitch of the scheduled doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
