WAYNESBURG, Pa (May 2) - On the final day of the regular season, the Waynesburg University baseball team swept a doubleheader versus first-place Thomas More. The Yellow Jackets won by scores of 3-0 and 5-2 on Saturday to earn a second-place finish in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).
Â
Waynesburg improved to 19-16-1 overall and 18-6 in conference play with the victories. The Yellow Jackets will be the second seed in the upcoming PAC Baseball Tournament, which begins on Thursday. Despite the pair of losses, Thomas More (27-10, 18-6 PAC) clinched the regular season championship and will host the conference tournament.
Â
Saturday marked the first time Waynesburg swept a doubleheader with the Saints since 2012.
Â
Junior pitcher
Brian Resnik threw a complete-game shutout in game one to improve his record on the mound to 8-2. The Waynesburg right-hander surrendered only two hits and two walks, while striking out five during the seven-inning contest.Â
Â
In the second inning, senior centerfielder
Kyle Weyand broke open a scoreless game with a two-out double that scored sophomore third baseman
Cameron Bernhardt, who raced home from first base. Three innings later, Waynesburg added a pair of insurance runs with two outs. A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch of sophomore designated hitter
Jonathon Kletzli forced home senior outfielder
Eric Crum. With the next hitter, junior catcher
Tyler Rubasky, at the plate, a wild pitch allowed senior left fielder
Ben Shorthouse to score the game's final tally.
Â
Waynesburg rode the momentum of the game-one victory to capture a quick lead in game two. Shorthouse led off with a double to left field and then scored on an error following a bunt single by sophomore shortstop
Nathan Mori. Following a fielder's choice by junior first baseman
Matt Bensinger, Kletzli knocked a single to center field that was misplayed by a Thomas More outfielder and allowed Bensinger to cross home plate, giving the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead. After a walk and a groundout, Bernhardt connected with a two-RBI single to center to give Waynesburg a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Â
The Yellow Jackets added another run in the second inning. Senior second baseman
Neal Yakopin started the inning with a double to center field. Back-to-back wild pitches allowed him to score and extend the lead to 5-0.
Â
Thomas More attempted to claw back into the game by scoring once in the third inning and once in the fifth. However, those were the only two runs the Saints could not manage against Waynesburg sophomore pitcher
Luke Carter.Carter threw seven innings to earn the complete-game victory. He scattered nine hits, walked two and struck out seven in the winning effort.
Â
As previously mentioned, the Yellow Jackets have earned the second seed for the upcoming PAC Championships and will meet third-seeded Thiel in the double-elimination tournament, at 12 p.m. The other first-round matchup will pit host Thomas More against fourth-seeded Washington & Jefferson.
