WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 11) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team hosted a tri-match at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Friday. The Yellow Jackets welcomed Marietta and La Roche to their home gymnasium and fell by the final scores of 3-1 and 3-0, respectively.
The Jackets (0-8) put together four competitive sets against the Pioneers (4-2) in the opening match of the day. Marietta pulled out a 25-22 victory in set one and followed that with a 25-18 triumph in the second set. Waynesburg pulled itself back into the contest by scoring a 25-17 victory in set three. Unfortunately, the Pioneers halted the rally in the fourth-and-final set by beating Waynesburg 25-22.
The Orange and Black was led offensively by junior middle hitter
Rachel Lang, who put down a team-high nine kills and tied for the match lead with four blocks. Junior
Shannon Morgan added eight successful attacks, while freshman
Sydni Ayers led all competitors with 24 assists. Senior
Jessica Dorazio paced the defense with a Jacket-best 19 digs.
Waynesburg's next match, which came against La Roche (4-2), featured set scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-19. Morgan tied for the contest lead with eight kills. Ayers posted a double-double with 17 digs and 13 assists, both of which were team highs.
The Jackets get back to competition on Wednesday, Sept. 16, when they host Thiel College. The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
*NOTE: Marietta defeated La Roche 3-0 to complete a two-match sweep.
