Women's soccer wins season opener

Fortna preserves Scott's shutout with OT goal

ALFRED, N.Y. (Sept. 4) – Freshman Natalie Fortna made a memorable first impression on her new collegiate teammates when the Waynesburg University women's soccer team opened its 2015 schedule. The rookie midfielder broke open a scoreless tie in overtime to send the Yellow Jackets to a 1-0 win over Alfred State at a tournament hosted by Alfred University.

After 90 scoreless minutes of action, Fortna took a pass from sophomore Nikki Davis and found the back of the net to end the contest in the 95th minute. The Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, native's first collegiate score preserved a shutout victory for senior goalkeeper Ciara Scott, who stopped seven shots on net.

The Jackets (1-0) out-shot the Pioneers (0-2) by a 17-to-10 margin on the day. Waynesburg will look for a two-game weekend sweep at the tournament when it faces the host Saxons. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
