WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 20) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team picked up one of its most dominant wins in recent memory on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets rolled past visiting Geneva by the final score of 84-47 at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.
The victory was Waynesburg's (4-12, 4-5) most lopsided of the season. Wednesday also marked the first time this year that the Jackets have won back-to-back contests.
Despite the final score, the home team led by just four points (14-10) with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half. A 7-0 run by the Jackets, which included points from senior guard
B.J. Durham, senior wing
D.J. Ritchie and sophomore guard
Kendall Paige, put Waynesburg into the driver's seat with a 21-10 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets kept control of the game for the remainder of the first half, which concluded with the Orange and Black boasting a 33-16 halftime lead. Ritchie canned a three-pointer to open period number two. That bucket set the tone for the remainder of the game, which saw Waynesburg steadily pull away over the final 20 minutes of the night.
Five Jackets scored at least 10 points each in the victory. Ritchie led the group by posting his fifth double-double of the year on a team-high 14 points and a game-best 10 rebounds. Durham added 13 points to the winning effort, while Paige and junior guard
Christian Koroly dropped in 11 points each. The quintet was completed by sophomore
Jon Knabb, who contributed 10 points against the Golden Tornadoes (2-14, 2-7).
Waynesburg also held sizeable advantages in both rebounds (43-to-31) and assists (19-to-four). The Jackets were also much more effective from the floor (47 percent-to-31 percent) and from three-point range (33 percent-to-six percent).
The Orange and Black are scheduled to play its third-straight home game on Saturday, Jan. 23, when Thomas More comes to the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
