NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Oct. 29) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team went up to Westminster on Saturday knowing it would be playing its final game of the 2016 season. Apparently the Yellow Jackets didn't want the year to end, so they played two overtimes in their match with the Titans, before ending in a 1-1 tie.
Both teams had their respective offenses playing wide open in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) clash, as they combined for 37 shots on the afternoon (23 for Westminster). The two teams also put a total of 23 shots on goal (nine for Waynesburg).
The Jackets (5-11-2, 2-6-1) struck first on the day in the 25
th minute of the contest. Senior
Melanie Burchfield tallied her final collegiate goal off a corner kick that deflected off the Westminster (9-7-3, 5-3-1) keeper into the back of the net.
Waynesburg looked like it was going to hold on for the upset until the 89
th minute of action, when the host team managed to tie the contest with just 35 seconds showing on the clock. That score sent the game into its first overtime.
Both teams were able to put attempts on goal in extra time, with Westminster doing it three times and the Jackets twice accomplishing the feat. None of the five tries found the twine, however, and the day ended in a draw.
Freshman
Courtney Syfert ended a better-than-average year between the pipes by piling up 13 saves, including nine in the second half.
