Jackets defeat Defiance

Waynesburg scores 87-79 triumph at Penn State Behrend Tournament

ERIE, Pa. (Nov. 19) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team got another big game from junior forward Addy Knetzer to lead a balanced scoring effort in its 87-79 victory over Defiance on Saturday. The game was played as part of the two-day Creative Imprints Tip-Off Classic, which was hosted by Penn State Behrend.

The majority of the contest featured the two teams going back-and-forth with four ties and four lead changes. After going into halftime with a 34-33 deficit, Waynesburg (2-1) used a 7-0 run in the late portion of the third quarter to take a 50-45 advantage on Defiance (1-1) with 2:23 left to play in the period. A three-pointer by sophomore guard Anna Bartman was the key hoop in the spurt.

The Jackets never trailed from that point on, and a pair of free throws from sophomore guard Julie DeKlaven gave the Orange and Black its largest lead of the game (77-64) with 2:35 remaining in regulation time. Waynesburg sealed up the win by successfully converting 14-of-22 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter alone.

Knetzer, who was named to the all-tournament team, saw her streak of double-double efforts to open the season end with two, but not by a wide margin. The junior standout paced Waynesburg in both scoring (22) and rebounding (eight) in the victory. She was one of five double-digit scorers for the Jackets.

Sophomore guard Monica Starre and senior backcourt mate Katie Gehlmann chipped in 14 points each on similar five-of-nine shooting effort. Senior forward Haley Delaney was even more efficient, as she connected on five-of-six shots for 12 points. She also tied Knetzer with eight rebounds. Junior MacKenna Drazich knocked down four-of-six attempts from the floor for 10 points over just 12 minutes of court time.

Waynesburg is back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 22, when they host Carnegie Mellon at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
