BETHANY, W.Va. (Nov. 30) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team opened Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Wednesday night with a road trip to Bethany. The Yellow Jackets fell by the final score of 79-65.
Waynesburg (1-4, 0-1) trailed by just seven points (30-23) at halftime, but a quick 7-2 run by the Bison (4-1, 1-0) bumped the home team's advantage up to 37-25 with 18:34 remaining in the game. The Jackets were able to whittle their deficit down to as few as seven points on multiple occasions before the game's conclusion, but came no closer to finishing the comeback.
First-year junior transfer
Marcus Wallace led the Orange and Black with a team-high 14 points on a respectable six-of-10 shooting effort from the floor. Junior wing
Jon Knab added 11 points, seven of which came from the free throw line, to run his streak of double-digit scoring efforts to five games to open the season. Freshman
Nick Valentic came off the bench to contribute nine points on the evening.
Despite a 14-point margin of defeat, Waynesburg stayed relatively close to Bethany in multiple statistical categories. The Bison held only minimal advantages in rebounding (38-36), three-point shooting (5-15, 5-16), steals (11-10) and turnovers (20-23).
The Jackets will take another shot at their first PAC win of the year on Saturday, Dec. 3, when they travel to Grove City. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
