SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Nov. 9) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team opened its season with a stern road test on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets traveled to Shippensburg and dropped a 27-13 match to the Raiders.
Shippensburg (1-3) came into the night as the number-24 ranked team in Division II. Waynesburg (0-1) went 4-4 in the eight contested weight classes, but its efforts to pull the upset were hampered by uncharacteristically featuring a pair of forfeits at 149 and 157 pounds.
The match started well for the visiting team, as junior 125-pounder
Tristan Buxton jumped out to a big early lead en route to a 12-9 win over David Reagan. Unfortunately, The Jackets wouldn't taste victory over the next five weights, as Shippensburg went on a 23-0 run that ultimately sealed their win.
Though he ultimately suffered a 5-3 loss, senior
Filippo Crivelli went toe-to-toe with one of Shippensburg's top wrestlers in returning Division II national qualifier Karl Lightner. Crivelli held a 3-1 lead going into the third period, but an escape and a late takedown by Lightner, combined with a riding point, ended Crivelli's hopes of victory.
Waynesburg finally got back on the winning track at 174 pounds, where sophomore
Nick Kusich not only scored a victory, but did so by 8-0 major decision over Colton Rebert. The Jackets made it two in a row when senior
Ryan Shank put together a 6-3 decision victory at 184 pounds.
Following the Raiders' last win of the night at 197, sophomore
Jake Evans ended Waynesburg's night on a high note by gutting out a 3-2 victory over Derek Berberick. Evans scored the only takedown in the bout.
The Jackets return to action on Saturday, Nov. 12, when they travel to the Washington & Jefferson Invitational. Action is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m.
