WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 8) – The Waynesburg University wrestling team hosted Muskingum at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse on Thursday night. The Yellow Jackets won six-of-eight contested bouts and rolled to a 34-12 win over the Muskies.
Waynesburg (3-4) has now won eight-straight against Muskingum (1-1) and improved to 2-0 this year in front of the home crowd. The Jackets played in front of a raucous fan base that was bolstered by a large amount of parents and young wrestlers who were on hand to participate in a youth clinic that was held before the match.
Junior
Tristan Buxton got the night started on the right track with a 7-2 decision win at 125 pounds. Buxton improved to 16-1 on the year. Muskingum briefly took a 6-3 lead after receiving a forfeit at 133 pounds, but regained a three-point edge when freshman
Brooks Robinson moved up to 141 to take a forfeit that made the score 9-6.
The Jackets never trailed for the remainder of the night.
Senior
Filippo Crivelli picked up an 8-1 decision at 149 pounds, before sophomore
Matt Claxton erased an early deficit to score a pin in 4:10 at 157 pounds. The Jackets took an 18-6 lead into the intermission.
Muskingum broke up Waynesburg's three-bout winning streak with a win at 165 pounds, but junior
Derek Hull fired back with the fastest pin of the night (3:47) at 174 pounds. Senior
Ryan Shank's 16-5 major decision at 184 bumped the Jackets' advantage up to 28-9.
The Muskies logged their final win of the night with a decision at 197, but sophomore heavyweight
Jake Evans ended the evening on a high note by earning his team-leading sixth pin. Evans stuck his opponent in 4:27.
A busy week for Waynesburg continues on Saturday, when it hosts a quad-match. The Yellow Jackets welcome The Apprentice School, #16 York (Pa.) and #20 Baldwin Wallace. Wrestling starts at 12 p.m.
