Men's hoops concludes regular season

Jackets score 68-63 road win at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Feb. 20) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team capped its 2015-16 regular season schedule on Saturday with a road trip to Chatham. The Yellow Jackets out-lasted the host Cougars to pick up a 68-63 win.

Waynesburg (10-15, 10-8) stumbled a bit out of the blocks and fell behind 19-10 after the first eight minutes of play. Chatham (4-21, 4-14) managed to stay ahead of the visitors for nearly the first 20 minutes of play. The Jackets finally broke through and grabbed a three-point lead (32-29) at the halftime break on a trey from freshman wing Brennan Smith.

The first seven minutes of period number two saw the two teams stay within a few points of each other. Waynesburg used its first big run of the game to take a nine-point advantage at 49-40. Senior guard B.J. Durham posted the final five points of a 9-0 surge that gave the visiting team its largest advantage of the contest to that point. Another trey from Durham extended the Orange and Black lead to 11 points at 54-43 with just under nine minutes remaining in the contest.

The home team managed to whittle its deficit down to two or three baskets down the home stretch of the regular season finale. However, Waynesburg's defense was able to close out the final 21 seconds of play to preserve the win.

Durham led the charge to victory with a game-high 17 points, the majority of which came on three three-pointers. Senior wing D.J. Ritchie chipped in 15 points on an efficient six-of-nine shooting from the floor. Senior forward Nate Labishak pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with five points. Junior Timmy Kaiser did his part for the offense by dishing out a contest-best eight assists off the bench.

Next up for Waynesburg is the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tournament, which gets underway this week. The fifth-seeded Yellow Jackets will travel to Thomas More on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tipoff. For a complete look at the PAC postseason, click here.
