Women's hoops heads to Saint Vincent

Big late comeback comes up short in 67-57 loss

LATROBE, Pa. (Feb. 3) – A furious comeback attempt fell short as the Waynesburg University women's basketball team dropped a road contest at Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Saint Vincent, 67-57. The Yellow Jackets trailed by 24 points in the fourth quarter but managed to slice the deficit to single-digits before late free throw shooting lifted Saint Vincent to victory.

Sophomore forward Addy Knetzer posted yet another double-double with team-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds. The performance was Knetzer's eighth double-double in her last nine games.  Junior guards Heather Davis and Kassidy O'Keefe complimented Knetzer from the outside by scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Jackets were down by just three points at halftime, but a 26-5 Saint Vincent run gave the homestanding Bearcats a 57-33 lead with eight minutes showing on the clock. Over the subsequent four minutes, Waynesburg put together a 12-0 run that was capped off by a three-pointer from senior forward Heather Davis.

Two free throws by Saint Vincent temporarily halted the Yellow Jacket run.  Waynesburg bounced back by scoring the next eight points, as a pair of Davis treys bookended two free throws by junior guard Katie Gehlmann trimmed the Bearcat advantage to six with two minutes remaining. Two Bearcat free throws were offset by a layup from senior guard Lauren Blair, but that was as close as the visiting team came to completing the comeback.

Waynesburg shot 32 percent (18-of-56) from the field, including 25 percent (five-of-20) from beyond the arc. The Yellow Jackets scored four of their five three-pointers in the fourth quarter.  Saint Vincent shot 34 percent from the field and 25 percent from three-point range.

With the setback, Waynesburg drops to 9-11 overall and 7-6 in the PAC while Saint Vincent improves to 10-10 and 5-8 in conference play.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action on Saturday at PAC rival, Washington & Jefferson. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
