Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball smothers W&J 66-39

Yellow Jackets give up fewest points in a game in 35 seasons

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 6) – The Waynesburg University men's basketball team continued its hot run through the recent portion of its schedule by picking up a 66-39 victory at Washington & Jefferson. The victory was the Yellow Jackets' third-straight, and their sixth in seven games. Waynesburg is now a game out of third place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) standings.

The Jackets (8-13, 8-6) got off to a bit of a slow start and trailed 15-13 after 12 minutes of play. However, Waynesburg rebounded in a big way by scoring the next 18 points and taking a 31-15 lead over the Presidents (1-20, 1-13). The visiting team cruised to victory from that point on and never trailed by fewer than 10 points and built advantages as large as 32 points before taking the win.

The Waynesburg offense was led by senior guard B.J. Durham, who dropped in a game-high 16 points, 12 of which came on four-of-nine shooting from beyond three-point range. Sophomore wing Jon Knabb added 14 points on a six-of-12 effort from the floor. Senior wing D.J. Ritchie just missed out on a double-double after going for eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Jacket defense held W&J to 27.5 percent shooting from the field and just two-of-13 from three-point range. The 39 points scored by the Presidents was the stingiest defensive effort put forth by a Waynesburg team since the 1980-81 campaign. The Orange and Black also held a sizeable 50-36 advantage in rebounding.

Waynesburg is back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 10, when it plays host to Thiel. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
