Softball ends spring trip

Waynesburg drops two on final day at The Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. (March 11) – The Waynesburg University softball team ended its stay at The Spring Games on Friday with contests against Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and Lebanon Valley.

The Yellow Jackets (2-8) were swept in the two seven-inning contests. Waynesburg fell 12-1 to WPI (5-2) in five innings after dropping an 8-1 decision to Lebanon Valley (3-4).

The Jackets found themselves in a 6-0 hole after five innings of competition against the LVC. Waynesburg finally broke up the shutout against the Dutchmen with a run in the top of the sixth. Junior designated player Lyndi Gareis singled to score senior Ciara Scott for the team's only run.

Freshman Cat Allstat started and took the loss in the circle after giving up six earned runs on 11 hits. She struck out three Lebanon Valley hitters. Despite the one-sided final score, Waynesburg was only out-hit by a 13-10 margin. Freshman shortstop Keri Renzler tallied three of those base knocks, one of which was a triple. Junior second baseman Ashley Demarco matched Renzler's three-hit performance.

Game two started in similar fashion as the early contest with WPI racing out to an 11-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the fourth. Senior center fielder Jessica Dorazio broke up the shutout by driving in senior Cami Grimes with a groundout in the bottom of the fourth.

Freshman Courtney Messenger was the pitcher of record for Waynesburg. She took the loss after starting and giving up nine runs, six of which were earned, on eight hits and a walk over 1.1 innings.

Five different Jackets connected on one hit each against the Engineers. Freshman first baseman Alex Lawrence doubled for the Orange and Black.

The Jackets return to action on Wednesday, March 16, when they host Franciscan for their home opener. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
