WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 16) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team opened its 2016 season on Wednesday with a home match against Muskingum. The Yellow Jackets battled over 60 minutes, before the Muskies pulled away for an 18-8 loss.
Waynesburg (0-1) fell behind 3-0 over the first 1:42 of play. The Jackets pulled themselves back into the contest thanks to goals by juniors
Shannon Morgan and
Abbie Miller. Unfortunately, a 6-0 run by the Muskies (3-3) ultimately put the game out of reach at 9-2. Senior
Morgan Vesco ended the first half on a high note for Waynesburg with her first goal of the season.
After falling behind 9-3 in the first half, the home team gave up the first four goals of the second half to fall behind 13-3. The Jackets took one last shot at a comeback thanks to three-straight scores. Juniors
Brandi Rohal,
Holly Bachman and
Danielle Beckford pulled their team to within seven points (13-6) with just under 16 minutes to play. However, Muskingum ended the contest on a 5-2 surge to seal up the win.
Senior
JoHanna Phillips started and played the first 34:14 in net. She gave up 12 goals and made eight saves. Junior
Kaitlyn Wetzel played the final 25:46 of the contest and stopped three-of-nine shots on goal.
Bachman paced the Waynesburg offense with four total points on a team-best three goals and an assist.
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, March 19, when its hosts The College of Mount St. Joseph for its first Ohio River Lacrosse Conference (ORLC) match of the season. Start time is scheduled for 12 p.m.
