ERIE, Pa. (March 17) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled north to Erie, Pennsylvania, to play a doubleheader with Penn State Behrend. The Yellow Jackets came up just short of victory in game one, a 6-5 loss, before dropping an 11-0 decision in the late contest.
Waynesburg (1-10) senior pitcher
Brian Resnik opened the early game with back-to-back scoreless innings before allowing the game's first run in the bottom of the third. The Jackets fired back with three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
Junior center fielder
Josh Hausler struck the first big blow of the afternoon with a two-run triple that plated freshman second baseman
Tyler Reis and junior right fielder
Luke Carter. The speedy Hausler then stole home to extend Waynesburg's advantage to two runs.
Behrend (9-2) tied the game with a two-spot in the bottom of the fifth, but the Jackets had an answer for the home team's challenge in the top of the sixth. Sophomore left fielder
Tyler Godwin doubled in Hausler, before senior first baseman
Matt Bensinger drove home Godwin with a single.
Unfortunately, Wayensburg couldn't hold the 5-3 edge, as the Lions took advantage of back-to-back two-out errors to snatch away the win. Resnik pitched well enough to win, as he gave up just three earned runs on nine hits and two walks. He struck out four opposing hitters in the loss.
Godwin doubled three times in four at-bats. Senior catcher
Tyler Rubasky went three-for-five with a double.
Behrend opened the scoring in game two with a run in the bottom of the opening frame, before adding three tallies in the second. The Lions blew the game open with a seven-spot in the third. The final three-plus innings saw no scoring from either team.
Godwin added two more hits in the late contest.
Defensive miscues hurt the Orange and Black once again, as a pair of errors led to four unearned runs for the Lions.
The Jackets open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Friday, March 25, with a nine-inning game at Thomas More. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
